Prevent the Ways to Wail

Time out of mind men have sat and wailed their woes. Oh, woe is us! We don’t want George W. Bush as president. Woe is us. We don’t want Arlen Specter in the position of approving or disapproving judges. Woe is us. We don’t like the lack of good shows on TV. Woe is us. We don’t like the laws our legislatures are making. Woe is us. We have mostly liberal news sources. Woe is us this, woe is us that.

We must wake up! Sitting around and whining about something is not going to get us anywhere. We’re not babies who must be waited on hand and foot, despite how we may act. It’s time to grow up. Wailing won’t get us anywhere, but clear, concise and logical thinking will. If you’re given fries without salt are you going to sit their having a pity party or are you going to get up and get yourself salt? Hopefully the latter – you and I are certainly capable of dealing with problems like that ourselves.

Alright. So crying and feeling sorry for ourselves isn’t going to cut it. We can’t parcel everything off to committees. If you’re not going to do something about it, then don’t complain. With all that’s going on there’s no room to complain but not act on something. But if we were to do more than complain, if we were to act on what we believe, we could make a difference. It is time to stop wailing our woes, and time to start preventing the ways to wail.

Preventing the ways to wail can be done in many ways. If you’re old enough to vote, make sure you’re registered and go out and vote every November. Get informed. Know who you’re voting for and why. Know how you’re voting on issues and why. If you’re not old enough to vote, get informed. Form opinions. And be sure to let people know your opinions and why you have them. Ways to do this include calling or writing your legislator and writing letters to the editor.

Why should we do this? Why bother? If we’re going to wail about woes, we might as well do something to prevent the woes. Then, and only then, can our voice be heard above the wailing and gnashing of teeth of those not wise enough to realize that they must act in order for something to be done.
