Is her hair real blonde, are her legs real long, does she look real foxy on the party lawn? You pretend your love is true but she’s just a symbol of success to you. 1
Today many women would object to be treated in such a way. Perhaps they would even claim that it placed them on a lower level than men. After all, such a viewpoint is certainly not a view that should be taken by a feminist—it’s a view that has more in common with a misogynist outlook.
Perhaps though, this should not be only taken literally. Perhaps there is something else to it aside from the literal meaning that some people view women merely as objects. In addition to this it seems that people are taken up with looking their best and appealing to others. Those viewed as icons do nothing to contradict this; actors and actresses getting divorced and falling in “love” with the next person to come their way.
And yet physical appearance does not last forever. Nor does it account for much. One does not need to be a Grace Kelly look-alike in order to be given respect. Yet it seems that it is physical appearance—cosmetic fixation—that determines how much respect one is given. Those who are pretty or handsome, wear popular clothes and follow the latest fads are those who are more popular and in turn are granted more respect.
Could it possibly be that this has something to do with the loss of respect on the whole in our society? If indeed we were to show respect to others simply because they are a human being like the rest of us, and not because of how they look or act or what they where—perhaps then we might be able to slowly begin to bring our nation back to the intent of the Founding Fathers.

I disagree with your conclusion. Society has always favoured the attractive, the faddish, the fashionable. Folks were just as concerned about looking good and keeping up with trends in 1789 as they are today. That doesn’t mean it’s a good thing; I merely wish to point out that the problem is not one of recent vintage.
What does fascination with fads have to do with the intent of the Founding Fathers?
