Can You Jump a Wall…on a Skateboard?

On his first attempt to jump the Great Wall, Danny cleared the 61-foot-distance across the Wall but lost hold of his skateboard and slid to the bottom of the landing ramp on his back. He was successful, however, on his next four tries, clearing the Wall and landing on his skateboard.

Danny Way, 30, is from Southern California. Since the age of six, he has shown amazing skill in skateboarding, and, prior to his jumping the Great Wall, Danny already held skateboarding records for distance (79 feet) and unaided height (23.5 feet). He also is the only man to have jumped out of a helicopter on a skateboard and without a parachute.

Danny’s jump over the Great Wall, however, broke all his previous records of distance, height, and speed. He had been thinking about and planning his jump over the Great Wall a few years in advance and had previously gotten approval from the Chinese government to perform his stunt. Danny was sponsored by Quiksilver, Inc., the Global Village Media Group, and MegaRamp™.

The Quiksilver and DC-branded Beijing MegaRamp that Danny used in his jump was built for the event. It was 120 feet tall, with a 75-foot-tall roll-in and a 30-foot-tall, 100-foot-wide quarter pipe, its cost being close to 500,000 dollars. Danny designed it to be the largest skateboarding structure ever created.

In a ceremony after the jump, Danny Way was presented by the local Chinese co-coordinator of the project with a small piece of the Great Wall, which Danny was apparently very honored to receive.

After this most recent jump over the Great Wall, Danny reportedly intends to make jumping the Grand Canyon on his skateboard his next goal.

See www.dannydoeschina.com for more information and video clips of Danny’s skateboard jumps. The clips really put things in perspective.

First, out of a helicopter with a skateboard and no parachute (how low was the helicopter?) and now he wants to go over the Grand Canyon on a skateboard. Okay, I think this guy’s got some issues.

I’m pretty sure that Danny Way jumped out of the helicopter on the skateboard and right onto the landing ramp just a few feet below. So perhaps not quite as impressive as it might sound. :)
