Utopianism is an embarrassingly common error in most developed societies today, and has been throughout all of history, despite all of history screaming to the contrary. Now, if you ask someone on the street if they think that we shall arrive at a point sometime down the road where humans will evolve to a higher plane, that we shall abandoned all war, poverty, disease, and live in harmony for eternity, you will probably get a laugh or a shrug, but the truth is that most people today in Western society are, in fact, believers in that fantastical land that Thomas More described so many years ago as Utopia.
